Video Monitors Video monitors allow viewing of the image from a camera or cameras. They come in various sizes with the standard being approximately 14 inches. Monitors are available in either black and white or color, as well as with different functionality. For instance, there are monitors that allow viewing of a single, full-screen image and can be switched from camera to camera. Another type of monitor enables multiple images to be viewed simultaneously. Other monitors, called slave monitors, have no controls but can be connected for simple viewing.
Video Recording Equipment VCRs have typically been the method used for recording video images. While generally low cost, some VCRs may have disadvantages including equipment maintenance, videotape changing, inefficient event retrieval, and image quality. Digital storage devices can remedy these problems at prices that are lower than the total life cycle cost of VCRs. And unlike VCRs, digital storage devices facilitate quick, easy and reliable retrieval of recorded images. This capability makes liability investigations efficient and productive.
DVR( Digital Video Recorders) These systems are the latest technology available for video recording. DVRs can be combined with event triggers, such as video motion detection and two-way audio systems, to transform your video surveillance system into an interactive video system. Benefits include: Motion detection recording, digital format, no need for video tape, easy CDRW for backup, fraction of the cost of a guard, ability to deliver digital video offsite. T.A.G. Hotline The TAG Hotline is a silent witness program that provides your employees a means to anonymously report incidents such as theft, illegal drug activity, vandalism, harassment, discrimination and other violations of company and public policy.
The TAG Hotline is a toll free telephone line that operates around the clock, seven days per week. When a call is received, our trained interviewers gather important information from the caller regarding the issue being reported. We then immediately notify your designated representative so an investigation can commence.
Our literature encourages employees to discuss their concerns with their respective supervisors. However, most crimes and compliance issues go unreported because many employees are inhibited by their fear of retaliation. The TAG Hotline is the clear, effective alternative for those employees who would most often remain silent. Taghotline.com is a proactive reporting tool, via the Internet, that is used by employees, as well as customers of member companies, to report violations, concerns, suggestions, etc., in an anonymous manner. The service is also used to provide reports of a positive nature. The reports are sent immediately.
When the employee visits taghotline.com, he or she will be instructed to enter their location code and anonymously report whatever they are concerned about. Their report will be emailed to the client.
You must inform your Onsite Security representative of the codes you select so they can be integrated into your personal site. This will allow you to retrieve reported information from each location that is affected by the program.
T.A.G. HOTLINE Posters are also available as part of this program to raise the loss prevention awareness level of your employees.
T.A.G. HOTLINE can also be used by your customers! Simply make the cards available to the customer, e.g., along with their receipt, or displayed on the counter next to the register, and they can use the site to report what they observed when visiting your business. Select a special code for customers only and write it into the code space. The customer code must be distinctively different than that of the location identification, and each location must have its own customer code. The customer code can be an extension of the location code.

2007 National Study Shows Marked Increase in Retail Employee Theft The holiday shopping season is here and with it comes the height of retailers' concerns over shoplifting and employee theft. According to the recently released 2000 National Retail Security Survey, U.S. retailers lost more than $40.2 billion from employee theft and more than $89 billion total last year.
Where Inventory Shrinkage Happens
- Employee Theft 48%
- Shoplifting 32%
- Administrative Error 15%
- Vendor Fraud 5%
According to the study conducted by the University of Florida, employee theft was up almost 7 percentage points from the previous study conducted in 2004. Employee theft now accounts for more than 48 percent of all retail losses in the United States. The tight labor market has created a combination of factors that lead to higher dollar losses across the retail industry. The record labor shortage leaves retailers short-staffed, producing more opportunity to steal. This is compounded by the more dishonest employees allowed into the workplace because of these same retail staffing shortages.
Employee theft and shoplifting combined account for the largest source of property crime committed annually in the United States. One positive note is while total dollars lost are up, there is a slight reduction of overall inventory shrinkage as a percent of sales. In this year's study total inventory shrink was 1.69 percent of sales, down slightly from 1.72 percent two years ago.
Other findings
- The amount of financial loss caused by the typical dishonest employee theft is $1,023.00.
- A dishonest employee typically works for his or her employer an average of nine months.
- The value of the average amount of merchandise taken by the typical shoplifter is $128.00.
- Employee theft and shoplifting were the number one and two biggest concerns respectively among retail loss prevention professionals.
- Retail segments with higher than average shrink rates as a percent of sales include: Gifts (2.91%), Toys & Hobbies (2.82%), Optical (2.59%), Convenience Stores (2.23%), Discount Stores (2.01%), Sporting Goods (1.91%), Department Stores (1.89%), Drug Stores (1.82%) and Supermarkets (1.81%).
What can retailers do to deter shoplifters?
- Provide good customer service
- Use electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags on merchandise
- Place closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras in plain view
Security and loss prevention advancements, such as source tagging, are taking hold in many retail segments. In the music industry, a retail segment prone to theft because of the small, highly desirable merchandise it carries, has seen a 25% drop in losses over the past two years, since source tagging with anti-theft technology has been implemented.
"While traditional methods of security will always be used by retailers, improvements such as source tagging, RFID systems and technologically advanced surveillance systems are the real weapons in a retailer's war against revenue loss," said Per-Olof Loof, Sensormatic's president and CEO. "Perhaps most importantly, consumers benefit from these new systems as they can provide a safer shopping experience while helping the retailer hold down the cost of merchandise and offer a wider selection of products."
What can retailers do to deter employee theft?
- Use video surveillance of sales associates, especially those working at cash registers
- Perform systematic background screening of job applicants
- Pay higher wages to hire and retain more dedicated employees
- Improve job satisfaction levels of retail sales associates
Watchful and attentive management is always a good deterrent to both employee theft and shoplifting. Richard C. Hollinger, Ph.D., the study's author, cites increased security as the most effective theft prevention method. "Retailers that take the time to protect their merchandise can greatly reduce their losses," said Hollinger. "Technical advances in store security systems, both those that watch the consumer and, more importantly this year, those that observe employee patterns, are essential elements in the fight to protect a retailer's bottom line."
